Hair Snoods – What are They and How to Style Them!
Snoods are excellent for covering the hair whether you need to protect your curls ready for an evening out or it’s a bad hair day and you just need something to make your hair look fabulous!
But where did snoods originate and how do you style them?
Snoods are shaped almost like a bag and are used to cover some or all of the hair. They are worn both for practicality and for fashion. It’s believed that snoods were worn as far back as the Medieval period! Snoods became particularly popular during World War II, both to keep factory workers’ hair safe, and as a fashion statement! They were usually netted or crocheted, and sometimes trimmed with ribbons, feathers, beads, bows, fringe, or silk flowers.
Whether they were worn partway back on the head or covered all of the hair, snoods were a great way to cover lightly without having to style the hair too elaborately – or to protect an elaborate hairstyle!
Snoods are still worn today by vintage loving gals and are a stylish hair accessory perfect for achieving a true vintage inspired look. Snoods are widely available in a variety of colours and thickness and include features such as diamanté, flowers, ribbons and so much more!
One of our favourite looks featuring a snood is victory rolls. This look is featured in the “Vintage Hairstyling by Lauren Rennells” book available right here at Deadly is the Female. For this look the hair is divided at the crown, the front section is styled into victory rolls in any way that you like. You could choose to do 2 large victory rolls or like in the picture below, smaller victory rolls that intertwine with one another.
If you’d like to learn how to style Victory Rolls we’d recommend checking out the All Dolled Up UK 1950’S Pinup Victory Roll’s Tutorial! Be sure to secure the victory rolls with strong backcombing, pins and a good hairspray. We’d recommend the Suavecita Hairspray!
The back section of the hair is curled and then placed inside the snood. The curls inside the snood help to hold the shape of the snood in place and they also look very pretty! To put the snood on, we’d recommend slightly tipping your head back and scooping the curls into the snood. The top of the snood will sit at the top of the crown behind your victory rolls, like in the picture below. Be sure to secure the snood in place with pins. Once the snood is secure you can carefully arrange the curls so that they help to spread the snood out evenly across the back of the head.
Ta Da! You have one fabulous snood look!
This look is perfect if you need a hairstyle for both day and night. Wear the snood for a 40’s inspired day time look and then for the evening, remove the snood and show off those beautiful curls for a glamorous evening look.
